Matthew Gustafson

Game and level design

I make games.

My name is Matthew and one of my greatest passions is creating experiences for other people to enjoy. Whether through level editors, mods, tabletop RPG's, live action role playing, or making my own video games, I've always loved crafting something that could deliver a sense of awe and wonder to people.Following that passion has shifted my career goals away from Information Technology to the game development sector. While I have always made games as a hobby, I'm excited to take my first steps into the game industry as a professional and look forward to bringing my broad life experience into the amazing field of interactive media.

Water City - Unreal 5 LD demo

Adventure through an abandoned city in the middle of an ocean. Find and destroy targets to progress and unlock new areas to explore.A two week development project in Unreal Engine 5.2 to both learn the engine and showcase some of my 3D level design philosophies.

Hop to, Kangaroo!

Help a stranded kangaroo find their way home! A short, 10 level "Sokoban-like" puzzle game made using Stephen Lavelle's PuzzleScript.

Various SHMUPs

While a lot of my projects are slower paced and puzzle focused, I also really love action games and second-to-second gameplay! Below are a few smaller playable projects in one of my favorite action genres: Shoot-eM-UPs!

Inconsistency

A puzzle-platformer game about inconsistent controls. Made for Windows using Game Maker Studio.Although visually simple, this game is all about the escalation of an idea. It's a good showcase of how level design plays an important role in pushing a basic concept to interesting, and sometimes very humorous, extremes.

Lazulin

Explore a mysterious castle in the sky using solar powered wings. What lies within? What happened to those who once lived here?Lazulin was created in 2010 by a team of 15 seniors at Champlain College, VT. It was made using the Unity game engine, with 3D assets done in Autodesk Maya and textures painted by hand in Adobe Photoshop.I was the lead 3D animator on the project and also contributed in design, concept art, textures, and music.
